Good
morning from Zermatt! Yesterday was an adventure and a half getting here. After
breakfast at Belvedere we got on the road to head south(?). We decided to take
“the long way” after hearing that there was a train ferry we would need to hop
on which didn’t sound like something we really wanted to do. To our surprise,
we still ended up on the train with some nervous smiles... ok I think I was the
only one that felt nervous! The only part that really wigged me out was when it
was totally dark for a while and we didn’t know when the light would return.
Mom and dad both felt that the rocking motion of the train was rather relaxing.
I took a Dramamine - two actually - to ensure I didn’t barf on this car ride,
but it made me very very sleepy and a little out of it. We stopped at one point
so I could get a bathroom break, a cappuccino and some fresh air. We stopped in
Tasch to park the car and serendipitously landed at the Europcar outpost. When
we asked her if she could park she gladly said we could leave the car there and
that she would get us a taxi to take into Zermatt... all just before offering
us three shots of grappa “for warming.” Our Chalet Hotel Schoenegg is a
little alpine dream with petunias spilling over the wooden terraces. We had to
get here via a little underground tunnel in the golf cart-like transporter,
which mom would like one of at the Inn. We have old fashioned keys to our rooms
and mom and dad have an amazing view of the Matterhorn.
After
checking in, we decided to explore a bit. There seemed to be a sort of street
fair going on when we got to the main drag (Bahnhofstrasse) as well as the
school children running about after their day was over. There seem to be a lot
more families and children here than in Zurich or Grindelwald. Mom found the
Bogner store and we had to look around in there for a bit, naturally. Once we
were done we decided we needed a drink and stopped in a little bar/restaurant
called Gees to enjoy some beer, wine, and spring rolls. We tootled around the
different stores and found a beautiful navy puffy jacket for mom and some rose
gold tennis shoes for me.
Dinner
was at a place our bartender from Hotel Schweizerhoff, Zurich recommended
called Spycher. It was amazing! Daddy finally got some Chateau Breaun to share
with mama and I finally got my Salmon. The “flambé show” was quite wonderfully
done. After, we hiked it back up in the rain to our hotel for a face time
session with grandma and Dalton and then finally a post-dinner drink and
desserts at the hotel bar. We chatted it up with Bastian about where to go for
the hike. I tried to convince mom and dad we could do the five lakes from the
village but we are going to take the train up for a bit to get our bearings - a
much better idea. Tonight I sleep with the window open and listen to the rain
:)
