Day
four in G-town was a blast! We went to the alpine cheese festival by bus and
sampled some amazing locally made cheeses as well as toured a cheese shed and
mingled with the locals. We loved meeting an adorable German/Dutch/Swedish?
couple that had us take a photo of them. The little 8-year old reminded me
exactly of Dalton as a little boy. The cheese sheds are beautifully decorated
with love flowers, greenery, and cow bells as the cheese makers display their
hard work from the summer. There was even some Swiss yodeling playing in the
background as we had what mama described as “the best open faced cheese
sandwich ever” (Raclette on wheat).
After
the cheese fest we made our way down the mountain by roads and little cow
trails. We found some adorable cows with bells and I got to scratch one on the
head! She was a doll... later I realized her little blaze looked like a heart.
How perfect! We also stopped by a little “Bird Park” and cafe midway down the
mountain from Gross Sheidegg. The park had beautiful owls, black crowd, a hawk,
and another huge prehistoric looking thing. It was a little sad that the poor
creatures had to be locked up like that but we were told that they had been
injured and wouldn’t be able to survive any other way. We will go with that.
At
the cafe, I had an “owl coffee” and dad had a beer while mama had plain black
coffee. My owl coffee had some sort of brandy mixture and whipped cream (YES).
We also shared the most amazing slice of cherry pie which seemed to have been
made with ricotta and dark black cherries. It was heaven!
As
we continued down the mountain we waffled in which trails to take. It was so
fun to traipse around the local chalets and enjoy the scenery. When we got home
we went to C und M and had a drink and salads and some drinks. Following this,
we went back to the hotel to relax on the deck. I fell asleep upstairs while
mom and dad met Carole and gave her the socks.
Post-nap
we went to the welcome drink hour on the deck again and I met Carole. We got
talking to a British couple that traveled here by car and told us their
thoughts on Spain, the French, and American Ice hockey. A blast! I could listen
to them for hours.
And
for dinner, we went to a place we had been offline for days - Da Salvi. Mom and
dad both had the pork plate - pork that had been roasting all day over the spit
-and I had the rabbit. The food was so incredible I had to convince mom to let
us take it home.... Even if we don’t eat it! Lastly, dessert was a chestnut
“vermicelli” with gelato, meringue, and whipped cream. It was like something
straight out of the movie Elf!
